When I do a fashion photoshoot., I gather many pieces together. Pieces that will fit the model, the feel, the theme of the shoot. This isnt like a mass produced store, where I can say; "Need a size XSM in 2 matching victorian dress." Wouldn't that be easy! No, rather, sometimes it takes Years to assemble all the outfits for a creative shoot. Sometimes it's by prayer alone and everything comes into play in a few days or weeks. I simply get an idea and then *poof* all the clothes seem to find their way to me. Except for that snarky Alice in Wonderland shoot -- it has been 5 years in the making and still, all the pieces to the puzzle have not quite come together as I imagine them. And I imagine quite a bit if your wondering. In fact for this most recent vintage fashion shoot, I imagined the faded post cards of the 1900's and the drama of Chanel of this fashion shoot, and *poof* it seemed to happen!
I sorted through the textiles, fabrics, silks, lace, and velvets in my storage space; some I had already placed online and other I have been collecting. There is something so dramatic and wondrous about pulling beauties form 500 plus pieces all lines up perfect and polished on their custom made rack, that total over 40 feet in length. 40 feet of vintage clothing -- Oh, OK, then, I do suppose I live in a fairy tale dream. I admit it now.
This shoot was very intentional collection of various pieces, from a variety of eras. There are treasures in there from an early 1980's YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) straight-off-the-runway show. T's the most dramatically gorgeous piece I think i may have and if my waist was an inch or two smaller, you wouldn't even know about this skirt. Then there is a few pieces from France, like the C. 1915's eyelet-lace, antique, ruffle gown.
How can 80 years match so well? The thing to always remember is the glamour that captivates the lovers of high-society, lawn-party, romance walks hand in hand with the chicness and stiff elegance that grabs the attention of steam punk, soft grunge, and goth girls. There is a commonality of luxury an elegance, fantasy and dreaminess. Victorian never really dies., it's recreated to mold to the modern women.
So back to the shoot. I pictured those old faded, beach themed pictured and post cards but I wanted a little contrast, aa little pop of different and unexpected. The 1900's greets Chic and dances a bit with a Bohemian flare that somehow would feel Victorian. I was a bit worried how it was going to pull off. I found a perfect, gorgeous 90's, almost hippy bohemian-style dress and placed a little Parisian cropped camisole tailored in the 1910's. I felt, it all flowed rather seamlessly. The antique gold cross with emeralds, rubies, and sapphires certainly helped bring home the feel of yesteryear with its sorta Renaissance flare.
Every piece was stolen from the 1900's, 50's- 60's or 90's - 80's. All these time jumps that collide in to one mysterious story., a sorta private club of the posh and the decadent. I certainly hope you enjoy our imaginations and the history that Salvato Collection vintage captured.
It doesn't end with my choice in clothing. Make up artist Rachael came in with faux freckles and victorian styled make up. She paired these soft brown fake lashes that makes it all quite perfect and feel very editorial. Plus Rachael seems to have a natural eye for accessories and pairs dup some fun little treasure that I had brought along. In addition., my models are sorta naturally enchanted and sweet and carry a regal and upscale essence. It was quite a perfect collaboration and here's to more fun in the future and creative adventures. Because, I could just throw all the clothes on a mannequin and sell, sell, sell... but then I wouldn't live in my fairytale.
